SCADA Applications & Installations:
Mid-Size Water & Sewer SCADA System - Washoe County Utilities
The Washoe County Utilities SCADA system, installed by Sierra Control Systems of Carson City, Nevada, consists of approximately 80 remote sites that are monitored and controlled from a master. The remote terminal units (RTUs) and master terminal unit (MTU) are designed around Control Microsystems' TeleSAFE and SCADAPack products.
The County water and sewer system consists of about a dozen communities and district areas. Each area water system is independent and functions within that area to serve the residents and industrial facilities. Therefore, each area must operate as an independent water system even during times when there are major outages in other areas.
The communication network consists of VHF radio systems that monitor and control the operation within a particular area and two UHF radio systems that transfer data back to the master. The UHF radios use a repeater at each end of the valley to allow for full coverage of the Utility District.
All of the water storage tanks are operated from batteries and solar power. These sites are either the TeleSAFE VS/3 controllers or the SCADAPack Light controllers which use the sleep mode to conserve batteries.
Most of the pump control units are designed around the SCADAPack and use an Operator Interface Terminal for setting the control parameters. The sewer monitoring sites are either TeleSAFE 6000 controllers or SCADAPack Light controllers.
